Originally intending to train as a Psychologist, Steve completed two years of the three year degree course at Auckland University before switching to a Double Major in Philosophy and French. After obtaining his BA, Steve decided to obtain a Law Degree. In his final year at Law School, Steve received a senior prize for Academic achievement, and obtained a degree with Honours. He was invited to return as a guest lecturer but declined the invitation, preferring to focus on practical advancement in his chosen career
Steve has been practicing continuously as a Barrister in the fields of Criminal and Traffic Law since June of 1988.

He has held various positions on Auckland District Law Society subcommittees, including the Legal Services Subcommittee (1995), the Criminal Law Committee (1998), and the Legal Aid Committee (1998) as well as assisting from time to time with the New Zealand Law Society Duty Solicitor Training programme.
 
He has been an elected committee member of the Criminal Bar Association.

He has also been invited to conduct Drink Driving Seminars by the Lexis Nexis team.

In 1998 Steve was appointed by the Auckland District Law Society as an approved Media spokesman on behalf of the Society and the profession. Steve has appeared on Television as a guest commentator on the interaction between young persons and the law on the Television programme "Flipside".

In 2000 Steve established Albion Chambers at 79 Wellesley Street West and from there provides legal representation to clients located throughout New Zealand.

In 2001 he was admitted as a Barrister and Solicitor of the Supreme Court of Pitcairn Islands
